Sarcophaguses: What are they?

http://www.reuters.com/resources/r/?m=02&d=20090226&t=2&i=8430414&w=450&r=2009-02-26T165840Z_01_BTRE51P1B5V00_RTROPTP_0_EGYPT-SARCOPHAGUSES

A sarcophagus is a funeral receptacle for a corpse, most commonly carved or cut from stone. The word "sarcophagus" comes from the Greek σαρξ sarx meaning "flesh", and φαγειν phagein meaning "to eat", hence sarkophagus means "flesh-eating"; from the phrase lithos sarkophagos (λιθος σαρκοφάγος) the word came to refer to the limestone that was thought to decompose the flesh of corpses interred within it.

Sarcophagi were most often designed to remain above ground, hence were often ornately carved, decorated or elaborately constructed. Some were built to be freestanding, as a part of an elaborate tomb or series of tombs, while others were intended for placement in crypts.

Today, Japanese archaeologists working in Egypt have found four wooden sarcophaguses and associated grave goods which could date back up to 3,300 years:

The team from Waseda University in Tokyo discovered the anthropomorphic sarcophaguses in a tomb in the Sakkara necropolis, about 25 km (15 miles) south of Cairo, the Supreme Council for Antiquities said in a statement.

Sakkara, the burial ground for the ancient city of Memphis, remains one of the richest sources of Egyptian antiquities. Archaeologists say much remains buried in the sands. The tomb also contained three wooden Canopic jars, in which ancient Egyptians tried to preserve internal organs, and four boxes for ushabti figures, the miniature statues of servants to serve the dead person in the afterlife, the statement said.

Grim Sleeper: A Murderer Who Sleeps Between Killing

In August 1985 a stranger began a horrific campaign of murder and rape that went almost unnoticed by the people of Los Angeles. In 1988 the killings stopped and Los Angeles Police Department breathed a frustrated sigh of relief.

Relief that lasted for over a decade until March 2002 when a 14 year old girl became the killer's 4th known victim after a 13 year hiatus. Now the LA police and public face a terrifying reality; the serial killer who has so far claimed 11 confirmed victims has awoke and is once again prowling the streets of LA. Striking at will and vanishing into the night.

After two decades the serial killer dubbed 'The Grim Sleeper' is back.

Dactylopius Coccus Costa insect in Your Food

Female (left) and male (right) Cochineals.
Red coloring in red food is made from insects. Did you know that? More here:

Cochineal (Dactylopius coccus Costa) is a relatively harmless natural red coloring extracted from miniscule scale insects that live on cactus pads. It’s been valued throughout Mesoamerica at least since the 10th century Toltec period. The ancient Aztecs called it nocheztli or grana, explained Jeff Schalau with the Arizona Cooperative Extension in Yavapai County. The traditional methods used to cultivate and harvest the cochineal insects and extract the brilliant crimson ink are still practiced in Mexico.

As she explained, the FDA has investigated the safety of cochineal and, except for rare allergic reactions to the dye (three cases in ten years), found it to be non-toxic. No bug parts actually end up in the extracted dye (carminic acid), either.

Reading the melodramatic Scientific American’s version, on the other hand, readers were warned they are eating the bug juices of dead “cochineal beetles.” Sourcing entirely from a press release from the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which has been lobbying the FDA to ban it or label foods to say it comes from insects, the article inflated the dangers of potentially life-threatening anaphylactic reactions.

Slumdog Millionaire Stars Get Heroes Welcome Home

Huge crowds gave the child stars of Slumdog Millionaire a rousing heroes' welcome as they returned to Mumbai from LA after the film's Oscar glory.

The young actors were greeted with garlands and held aloft by the crowds as they stepped out of Mumbai airport.

Composer AR Rahman, who won two Oscars, received a similar welcome as he arrived in his home city of Chennai.

The film, a rags-to-riches story about the winner of game show Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, won eight Oscars.

The children were flown to Los Angeles for last weekend's 81st annual Academy Awards.

Two of them, Azharuddin Ismail (who plays the youngest Salim) and Rubina Ali (who plays the youngest Latika) still live in the slums in western Mumbai.

Home Style Cordless Bug Zapper Review

Home Style Cordless Bug Zapper
To be sure, stinging and buzzing insects can ruin even the most meticulously arranged garden party. These unwanted guests must be banished, without exception or pity. But a gauchely utilitarian insect electrocutor is very nearly as bad. We are talking about the grounds of my home, not some NASCAR tailgate in a drainage ditch. It is not enough that the insects be electrocuted. They must be electrocuted in style!

So I appreciate these Home Style Bug Zappers for their aesthetic appeal as well as their 2200 volts of insect-scorching power. I prefer the Monaco, of course, but a variety of other looks are available, none completely hideous. And the internal rechargeable battery defeats the scourge of unwieldy and unattractive power cables. For someone with my reputation to maintain, a no-frills bug zapper would spark contempt and ridicule as surely as it sparked insects. Host my friends and rivals with an ugly bug zapper? I would sooner be eaten alive by mosquitoes!

Samim Anghaie Actually Defrauded NASA of Tax Dollars

http://www.inspi.ufl.edu/icapp06/organizers/Anghaie,%20Samim1.jpg

This professor has balls for trying to cheat NASA of taxpayer dollars.

The FBI and NASA are investigating a University of Florida professor and his wife for allegedly defrauding NASA out of hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars for their own personal use.

Iranian-born Samim Anghaie, 59, is the Director of the Innovative Nuclear Space Power and Propulsion Institute at the University of Florida. His wife, 55-year-old Sousan Anghaie, is president of New Era Technology Inc. (NETECH) in Gainesville, Fla.

Authorities say Sousan Anghaie persuaded NASA to award her company "several fully funded contracts," including nearly $600,000 to develop and study a uranium-related technology. But, according to an affidavit unsealed today in federal court, the couple allegedly used most of that money to buy personal luxuries — including their $480,000 home in Gainesville, a 2007 BMW and a 2005 Toyota Sienna sports van.

World's most pierced woman adds to her collection

Guiness World Records confirms that Elaine Davidson is the world's most pierced woman with over 6,000 body piercings. (link)

When first accredited by a Guinness World Record official in 2000, Davidson had 462 piercings, with 192 in her face alone.

Now, nine years later, she has 6,005 including more than 1,500 that are "internal".

However, despite her eye-watering record, Miss Davidson, born in Brazil, claims she doesn't like being pierced, and suffers for her art.

She said: "I don't enjoy getting pierced, but to break the record you have to get to a high level.
